Oak Bluffs- Martha's Vineyard, MA

This past weekend we made our first trip to Martha's Vineyard to enjoy our summer afternoon. The traffic from Boston to Cape Cod was brutal but once we finally got to the ferry it was all worth it, as there was hardly a cloud in the sky and just a nice breeze. We took the Steamship Authority ferry from Wood’s Hole in Falmouth to Oaks Bluffs which costs $16 for a round trip. The two main Steamship Authority ferry's travel to either Oaks Bluffs or Vineyard Haven, rotating destination with every departure. Parking near the ferry is a bit pricey with private lots around $50 per day. However there are signs directing traffic to lots that are less than 10 minutes away with a shuttle bus that brings you directly to the ferry. With that in mind, we recommend you get there a good time before your ferry's departure to accommodate any delays with the shuttles or parking. If you are planning on bringing your car on the ferry, reservations need to be made well in advance.

The ride takes around 45 minutes total, which was the perfect distance to enjoy the ride, but not be too eager to get off the ferry. The ship is huge, so there’s plenty of room to hang out on the back and front deck, or sit inside- whichever you prefer. We saw plenty of fish jumping and great views of the coast. Upon arriving at Oak Bluffs, many visitors either rent mopeds or bicycles to get around the island. However, since we were only going to be here for the day we wanted to fully experience Oak Bluffs and uncover all territory in this one town. So of course our first stop was the beach

We decided to walk a little further down past the sea wall to a more secluded area of the beach that was situated in a cove. Martha’s Vineyard has beaches everywhere so its easy to find a nice secluded spot if you look around. The water was clear enough to see the little minnows swimming around. A few locals came by with their kayaks to go fishing off of the shore.

After the day on the beach we walked into town. There were many cool shops and places to eat or grab a drink by the marina. We stopped by Lobsterville and got a seat on their top deck overlooking the harbor.

For dinner we went to Offshore Ale Co, the vineyard's microbrewery. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was rustic and country, with floors decorated in shells from each tables basket of peanuts. We ordered the Roasted Half Chicken and the Portuguese Fisherman's Stew. The ambiance was great and so was the food!

Before heading back for our 8:30 pm ferry, we stopped by the Lookout Tavern to catch the the sunset over the water. The views from here were awesome. We had a great trip in Oak Bluffs and will be back soon to explore the other parts of the island!
